Daffodil Bulbs - Narcissus Tragic Greek Myth

The Latin name for Daffodil is Narcissus. Narcissus is named after the tragic Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus. Echo was a nymph who tragically was only able to repeat the last word she heard. She saw Narcissus, who was staring at himself in a pond, and promptly fell in love with him. Echo was too scared to show herself. "Who's there?" Narcissus asked. "There", Echo answered. After Narcissus had asked more questions but failed to discover who was talking to him, he lost himself in his reflection in the pool of water - he fell in love with himself - failing to realise he was staring at his image reflected in the pool. He died eventually, and his body turned into a white narcissus flower, which still grows favourably alongside water's edge.

Daffodil Bulbs Early Spring Flowering

Daffodils are traditional early spring flowering bulbs that have been popular throughout the ages. This much-loved flower bulb is one of the earliest flowers to bloom in the growing season. Many city and town councils like to plant this lovely flower in parks and along motorways. When they think of daffodils, the cheery bright yellow flower pops into most people's mind. But there a lot of different kinds of varieties available for sale online. Narcissus Sweet Pomponette is a yellow and white double flowering kind. Narcissus Double Replete is a pink and white double flowering daffodil. Another much-loved double flowering type is Narcissus Manly, which has beautiful pastel yellow coloured blooms. All three flowers are sure to catch your eye in the garden. Narcissus Paperwhite and Actaea are shade loving varieties sporting vibrant white flowers, although most daffodils require a place in full sunlight to grow and bloom well.

Daffodil Care and Maintenance

Daffodils are easy to care for and need little maintenance. You can plant them anywhere you wish in the garden, and they are also great pot plants. Water them when they are in full bloom and allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. Take care to deadhead the flowers after flowering, to prevent them from producing seed. It is easy to hide the withering leaves, if you find them unsightly, by combining daffodils with perennial plants, that grow up around them in the flower border. You can leave the bulbs to naturalise in the garden, or dig them up and replant them every three or four years.

Narcissus bulbs - surely not narcissistic

The Narcissus takes its name from the tragic Greek myth about Echo and Narcissus. The talkative nymph Echo was bewitched so she was only able to repeat the last word she was told. Then she fell in love with Narcissus, who was resting near a pond, but was scared to show herself. "Who's there?" Narcissus asked. "There", Echo answered. After a number of unanswered questions, Narcissus lost himself in his own image in the water, died and turned in to a Narcissus and Echo languished until only the echo remained.

Narcissus - popular historic flowers

Narcissus are historic flower bulbs that have never lost their charm and popularity throughout the centuries. This very well-known flower bulb is one of the earliest spring blossomers, which gives it some of its charm. The wonderfully coloured Narcissus cheerfully announces the spring. Doesn't that make everybody happy? Besides the well- known yellow Narcissus, Koeman Garden Centre also sells several different coloured Narcissus bulbs. View our range online. There is surely a Narcissus that appeals to you.
