Calibrating hygrometers
Calibrating hygrometers and determining the accuracy of your meter can be done in a couple of different ways. By wrapping the meter in a damp, wrung out cloth, you can easily check the instrument to determine whether there is an obvious deviation. If the meter is accurate, it will measure about 96 to 98% humidity after approximately half an hour. If it does not, it probably needs re-calibrating. Another method is known as the 'salt method'. Place a dish with moistened kitchen salt in an air-tight container. Put the moisture meter in the container and close it. After about 8 hours the humidity percentage in the container should measure around 75%. If the Hygrometer indicates a higher or lower percentage than this, then it is probably inaccurate, and re-calibration is required.
