Common Rue (Ruta graveolens) is a graceful and strong smelling herb that has been used extensively for medicinal purposes since Roman times. Nowadays Common Rue is mainly used as an ornamental plant in the flower border. Rue is a Mediterranean plant and therefore thrives in poor, well drained soil. Because Common Rue tolerates heat and dry conditions well, it is an ideal plant to grow in hot, south facing gardens. Common rue has beautiful leaves that add a lovely contrast in the garden and blooms with bright yellow flowers in early summer. Butterflies love Rue, so you would be doing them a big favour by adding this lovely herb to your collection. It is also an excellent container plant.Warning: Ruta gaveolens is a well known abortifacient herb. Use can induce miscarriage.
