Buy Canna Lilies – Tropical Summer Colour with Bold Foliage

Canna lilies are anything but ordinary summer plants. With their large, exotic leaves and vibrant blooms, they instantly bring a tropical feel to the garden. Combining bold foliage with striking flower colours such as red, orange, yellow and pink, Cannas are perfect for gardeners who enjoy a lush and dramatic planting style.

Growing from rhizomes, Canna plants quickly develop into eye-catching focal points. They thrive in a sunny border, beside a patio, or in large containers on a terrace or balcony. Thanks to their height and generous leaf growth, they are also ideal for softening fences, walls or less attractive corners of the garden.

Why choose Canna plants?

  • • Large, architectural foliage with a tropical look
  • • Long flowering period from mid-summer until the first frost
  • • Best suited to full sun and warm, sheltered positions
  • • Excellent for borders, containers or as statement plants
  • • Vigorous growth with impressive impact

Canna lilies thrive in warmth and sunshine. The more sun they receive, the more generously they will flower. Plant them in fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly during dry spells. Feeding throughout the growing season will encourage strong stems and repeat blooms.

Are Canna lilies hardy in the UK?

Canna lilies are not fully hardy in most parts of the UK. Their rhizomes will not survive prolonged frost in wet soil. After the first frost has blackened the foliage, cut the stems back to around 10 cm above ground level. Lift the rhizomes carefully, allow them to dry, and store them in a cool, frost-free and dry place over winter. Replant them in spring once the risk of frost has passed.

If grown in containers, pots can be moved into a frost-free shed or garage for the winter months.

Planting Canna rhizomes

Plant Canna rhizomes in spring once the danger of frost has passed, typically from late April or May onwards, depending on your region. For an earlier display, start them indoors in pots from March. Plant around 8–10 cm deep in light, fertile soil enriched with compost.

Canna lilies pair beautifully with dahlias, ornamental grasses and other summer-flowering plants. They add height and structure to borders and provide bold colour throughout the summer.
